Weight and Hair Loss Goes Hand by Hand


There are various causes of hair loss and there is no question about the connection between weight loss and hair loss. While juice fasts and other popular quick reduction diets may help shrink some into skinny jeans overnight, it can often cause luscious hair to shrink along with the fat. Massive hair shedding may not happen immediately after a new fast or similar crash diet is started. In some cases there is a two to three month delay between the actual start of the diet and the actual beginning of hair loss.
There are other non-genetic causes of or contributors to hair loss. Anything extreme that can become a significant "stressor" to the body may cause a type of temporary thinning known as telogen effluvium effect.
Can it be prevented?
Although there are various professional opinions about TE and its ultimate impact, dermatologist and other hair experts generally agree that for the majority of people that experience the condition, the hair loss is not permanent.
Although controversial, some weight loss specialists believe that taking special nutritional supplements and hair vitamins during a weight loss program will prevent the hair loss that can be associated with dieting.
While this may be the case with a slow weight reduction program, nutritional supplements and vitamins can't and won't completely stop hair loss that is tied to rapid and massive weight loss. In ANY weight loss program that you follow, hair loss often occurs at the same time. This is a natural result and the hair will grow back in once you reach your target weight. Often the hair is even thicker than before!

Compared to other diets, the low carb diet is BEST for your hair. Three key vitamins to take to help your hair are protein, iron and zinc - and these are in high supply on a low carb diet. Note that these vitamins will not STOP the temporary hair loss while you diet. The hair loss is a normal part of your body's reaction to losing the weight. However it will help the hair grow in more fully when you have reached your target.
Two things that also impede hair growth are an excess of Vitamin A, and stress, both common with weight loss diets. So a way to reduce the hair loss situation is to find ways to relax more and to make sure that your vitamin A intake is not overabundant.
Speak to a dermatologist about your hair loss concerns and if there's any question that your condition is genetic or other then weight loss, the dermatologist can perform a full medical analysis on you to narrow down its cause.
Although many people suffering from TE will work with a dermatologist or other licensed hair loss professional to halt the hair loss, others have found some measure of success with alternative treatments such as special formulated vitamin and mineral supplements.
