Link Between Weight Loss and Hair Loss

Though there are many causes of loss of hair problem, the definite link between weight loss and hair loss is still something that's still up for debates. To answer this question, understanding both weight loss and hair loss could be key.
Let's first try to understand hair loss more. Shedding a few strands of hair daily does not mean that you are indeed suffering from loss of hair problem. In fact, losing up to 100 strands of hair is considered to be normal - as it will simply be replaced with new one coming from the same follicle on the scalp. However, when you start experiencing significantly more than that number every single day, it could be a sign of a loss of hair problem. This problem should be something that's given an immediate concern, because things can get worse if it's left untreated for too long.
There are many reasons why a person suffers from loss of hair. This problem can be caused by illness, hormonal imbalance, heredity, trauma, depression and stress. Medications may also play a role in such a problem. For example, chemotherapy that is used to treat cancer is known to cause rapid hair loss. However, once the treatment is stopped, so too will the loss of hair. Diseases that may lead to the thinning of the hair include diabetes and thyroid.
Infections on the scalp could also cause thinning of the hair. An example of this would be the Tinea Capitus - commonly known as ring worm. This is a common fungal infection that mostly infects children.
As for the connection between weight loss and the loss of hair, some studies have shown that the two might be indirectly linked. Most people in their lives, at one point in time, have attempted to lose some weight - be it for health reasons or others. Some may even resort to extreme method to lose weight by severely limiting their food intake. In such a case, the body will be lacked in much needed nutrients and minerals such as vitamin, biotin, niacin and iron. Doing so will not only endanger your overall health, but a low level of iron in the blood level will also lead to loss of hair problem.
While more studies are required to fully understand the link between the two, for now it is understood that some weight loss methods may trigger the thinning of the hair. It is therefore important to not resort to such extreme method. Instead, you should try living a healthier lifestyle - as it can be beneficial both to your attempt to lose weight and in keeping your hair intact and healthy.
