Weight Loss and Hair Loss - The Connection

While doing research, I was stunned to find out that while trying to get thin and cute I could lose my hair!
What???
So, basically, once I get thin, now I have to worry about my hair shedding...
Yes indeed I do.
According to the Dermatologist, Dr. Robert Rosen at the AOCD, Telogen Effluvium is a condition where you shed large amounts of hair due to some type of stress to your system.
This stress can be in the form of a crash diet which lacks protein.
What is insane to me is what our bodies do without the protein.
When our bodies don't get enough, hair will stop growing and decide to pack its bags and move to the telogen phase, even if it is not supposed to be there yet.
The telogen phase is the resting phase of hair growth. And, it is the last stage before our hair says sayonara to our scalp and leaves for good.
So you could be losing your hair because your body made an executive decision to take your less than ideal protein levels to build living tissue in your body rather than grow your hair. The nerve!!!
Yikes!! Did you just put your body in an awkward position??!!!
Yes, you did.
The key to natural hair growth, is not only gentle hair care practices, but a well balanced diet. To make your body choose between growing your hair and building tissues and muscles for your body is just unfair.
Nobody likes an ultimatum. Your body and hair deserve better. Consult your doctor to find out whether you have a protein deficiency.
You care about your hair so don't let it take an early vacation into the telogen phase.
